The product group covers taper candles, pillar candles, tea light candles, graveyard candles, garden candles, candles for decoration and oil candles/-lamps.

A Nordic Swan Ecolabelled candle is a candle meeting specific criteria for environmental performance, health aspects, quality and safety.

This is a candle that has a clean burning because there are limit values for soot emission and content of health- and environmental damaging chemistry. Furthermore the candle consists of more than 90% renewable raw materials.

Below you will find all the necessary documents and background information to apply for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

    Annual licence fee: The annual licence fee for the Nordic Swan Ecolabelled products is based on their turnover in the Nordic countries.

    0.3% of turnover + VAT from 0 – 30.9 million EUR 
    0.05% of turnover + VAT > 30.9 million EUR
    Minimum fee for Nordic region 2 232 EUR + VAT per year
    Maximum fee for Nordic region No maximum fee

    Fees for sale outside the Nordic region          
    (Only if revenue > 309 000 EUR per year)

    If the Nordic Swan ecolabelled products are only sold outside the Nordic countries, a minimum fee is always charged.

    * When both the applicant and the manufacturer are micro-enterprises, the fee is reduced by 50%. A micro-enterprise is in this context defined as an enterprise with less than 10 employees and an annual turnover (of both ecolabelled and not ecolabelled products) below 2 million EUR.

    ** Where audits requires more than one day away from the office including travelling, Nordic Ecolabelling can invoice an additional fee of 1 115 EUR per extra day. Other extraordinary costs induced by the audit can also be invoiced the applicant.

    *** As for an extension of or amendments to a licence, time consumed in connection with the review process will be invoiced according to the extent of the required task. We make a distinction between entirely administrative tasks that last less than 1 hour, and all other tasks that last between 1 and 4 hours, between 4 and 8 hours and more than 8 hours.

    The recipient is liable for the VAT according to article 56 of the Council Directive 2006/112/EC.

    2.8 ⇛ 2.9: Adjustment of criteria

    Nordic Ecolabelling decided on 9 April 2024 to include standards for outdoor candles as option for fire safety and label pictograms in requirements O19 Fire safety and O20 Consumer information. Version 2.9.

    2.7 ⇛ 2.8: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    Nordic Ecolabelling decided on 29 November 2022 to prolong the criteria with 12 months to the 31 December 2025. Version 2.8.

    2.6 ⇛ 2.7: Adjustment of criteria

    Adjustment of the definition of impurities (chemicals) in printing inks used to print on candle surface. The new version, 2.7, is valid until 31 December 2024.

    2.5 ⇛ 2.6: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The criteria's validity has been prolonged with 12 months. The new version, 2.5, is valid until 31 December 2024.

    2.4 ⇛ 2.5: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The criteria's validity has been prolonged with 18 months. The new version, 2.5, is valid until 31 December 2023.

    2.3 ⇛ 2.4: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The criteria's validity has been prolonged with 20 months. The new version, 2.4, is valid until 30 June 2022.

    2.2 ⇛ 2.3: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The criteria's validity has been prolonged with 16 months. At the same time requirement O27 has been removed. The new version, 2.3, is valid until 31 October 2020.

    2.1 ⇛ 2.2: Adjustment of requirement

    Adjustment of O9. It was decided to allow the use of aluminum in containers that are designed to be used multiple times for the same purpose, if it the amount of aluminum is less than 15% of the container's total weight. Furthermore, the document is updated with a number of former interpretation requirements. The new version is called 2.2.

    2.0 ⇛ 2.1:

    Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    Requirement O19 was removed. The criteria's validity was prolonged with 12 months. The new version, 2.1, is valid until 30 June 2019.

    2.0: New criteria generation

    Version 2.0 of Nordic Ecolabel's criteria for candles was published on November 5th 2015. The criteria are valid until 30 June 2020.
