Non-rechargeable portable batteries 001

Nordic Swan Ecolabel non-rechargeable portable batteries meet strict requirements on responsible sourcing, raw materials, energy sources used in production and quality.

Nordic Swan Ecolabel non-rechargeable portable batteries:

  • Have a reduced climate impact by being manufactured with at least 10% renewable self-generated or greenfield PPA electricity, supporting the development of renewable energy production. Fossil oil or coal is not allowed in the production.
  • Meet quality standards that ensure a long lifetime for the battery.
  • Contain lower levels of mercury, cadmium and lead than permitted by legislation, thereby reducing the spread and use of harmful metals.
  • Do not contain PVC and have no added PFAS.
  • Contain responsibly sourced mineral raw materials. The manufacturers actively address social and environmental risks associated with the sourcing, processing, and trading of these materials throughout the entire supply chain.

The product group includes non-rechargeable portable batteries in accordance with the definition given in the European Union’s Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

    Annual licence fee

    The licence fee for the Nordic Swan Ecolabelled products is based on their turnover in the Nordic region.

    Up to 31.394 million EUR. 0,3% of the products' turnover
    More than 31.394 million EUR. 0,05% of the products' turnover
    Minimum fee in the Nordic region 2 267 EUR per year.
    Fixed fee applicable to turnover outside the Nordic region 2 267 EUR per year for turnover exceeding 300 000 EUR.

    Fee for extension / change of licence

    Fixed fee that is charged depending on how long the work takes.

    Up to 4 hours 424 EUR
    4-8 hours 849 EUR
    8 or more hours 1 699 EUR

    Fee for on-site inspections

    One on-site visit within the Nordic region is included in the application for a new or renewed licence.

    Additional on-site inspection within the Nordic region 565 EUR per visit
    On-site inspection outside the Nordic region, but within Europe 1 699 EUR per visit
    On-site inspection outside Europe 2 834 EUR per visit
    Additional fee for on-site inspections lasting longer than one day 1 132 EUR per day

    Up to 30.9 million EUR. 0,3% of the products' turnover
    More than 30.9 million EUR. 0,05% of the products' turnover
    Minimum fee in the Nordic region 2 232 EUR per year.
    Fixed fee applicable to turnover outside the Nordic region 2 232 EUR per year for turnover exceeding 300 000 EUR.

    Fee for extension / change of licence

    Fee for on-site inspections

    6.0: New generation of criteria

    Nordic Ecolabelling adopted version 6.0 of the non-rechargeable portable batteries on 14 January 2026. The criteria are valid until 31 October 2030.

    5.3 ⇛ 5.4: Prolongation of the criteria's validity

    The validity of the criteria has been prolonged with 14 months. The new version, 5.4, is valid until 28 February 2027.

    5.2 ⇛ 5.3: Prolongation of the criteria's validity

    The validity of the criteria has been prolonged with 12 months. The new version, 5.3, is valid until 31 December 2025.

    5.1 ⇛ 5.2: Prolongation of the criteria's validity

    The validity of the criteria has been prolonged with 12 months. The new version, 5.2, is valid until 31 December 2024.

    5.0 ⇛ 5.1: Adjustment of requirement

    Requirement O9 has been adjusted for minimum permitted operating time. The new version, 5.1, is valid until 31 December 2023.

    4.8 ⇛ 5.0: New generation of criteria

    A new generation for Nordic Swan Ecolabelled Primary Batteries has been adopted. The new version, 5.0, is valid until 31 December 2023.

    4.8 ⇛ 4.9: Prolongation of the criteria's validity

    The validity of the criteria has been prolonged with 6 months. The new version, 4.9, is valid until 31 December 2020.
