Stoves 078

The product group includes different solid fuel local space heaters fired with solid biofuel (wood, pellets, briquettes, etc.) and radiate heat in the rooms in which they are located: stoves, insert appliances, slow heat release appliances, automatically operated pellet stoves, and sauna stoves.  

The requirements include:  

  • Environmental and health properties of chemicals used in manufacturing of the product and in any surface treatment. Among others, halogenated organic compounds and PFAS are prohibited.  
  • Limits on VOC content in surface paint and varnishes.  
  • Pressure and leak test of the finished stoves and insert appliances.  
  • Stricter requirements for energy efficiency and lower limits on emissions of particulate matter, Organic Gaseous Compounds (OGC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) than those in the EU regulations.

    Annual licence fee

    The licence fee for the Nordic Swan Ecolabelled products is based on their turnover in the Nordic region.

    Up to 32 241 638 EUR. 0,3% of the products' turnover
    More than 32 241 638 EUR. 0,05% of the products' turnover
    Minimum fee in the Nordic region 2 328 EUR per year.
    Fixed fee applicable to turnover outside the Nordic region 2 328 EUR per year for turnover exceeding 300 000 EUR.

    Fee for extension / change of licence

    Fixed fee that is charged depending on how long the work takes.

    Up to 4 hours 435 EUR
    4-8 hours 871 EUR
    8 or more hours 1 744 EUR

    Fee for on-site inspections

    One on-site visit within the Nordic region is included in the application for a new or renewed licence.

  • 5.0: New criteria generation

    Nordic Ecolabelling adopted version 5.0 of the criteria for 078 Stoves on 18 August 2026. The criteria are valid until 30 September 2031.

    4.7 ⇛ 4.8: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The validity of the criteria has been extended with 10 months. The new version is called 4.8 and is valid until 1 October 2027.

    4.6 ⇛ 4.7: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The validity of the criteria has been extended with 12 months. The new version is called 4.7 and is valid until 31 December 2026.

    4.5 ⇛ 4.6: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The validity of the criteria has been extended with 12 months. The new version is called 4.6 and is valid until 31 December 2025.

    4.4 ⇛ 4.5: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The validity of the criteria has been extended with 12 months. The new version, 4.5, is valid until 31 December 2024

    4.3 ⇛ 4.4: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

    The validity of the criteria has been extended with 18 months. The new version, 4.4, is valid until 31 December 2023

    4.2 ⇛ 4.3: Prolongation of validity of the criteria

    The validity of the criteria has been extended with 20 months. The new version, 4.3, is valid until 30 June 2022

    4.1 ⇛ 4.2: Prolongation of validity of the criteria

    The validity of the criteria for Nordic Swan Ecolabelled stoves has been extended. Furthermore requirement O29 Take-back system has been removed.

    The new version, 4.2, is valid until October 31st 2020.

    4.0 ⇛ 4.1: Alteration of criteria

    • Requirements O18 and O19 have been adjusted regarding information on chimney height and the lighting method.
    • The requirement to emissions of particles in O14 Emissions to air was adjusted.
    • An exemption for the use of surface paint in spray cans regarding the VOC content in O6 was added.
    • Requirement R31 Marketing was removed.

    The new version, 4.1, is valid until June 30th 2019.

    4.0: New version of the criteria

    A new version, 4.0, of Nordic Ecolabel's criteria for stoves was published on June 11th. The new version contains significantly tightened requirements of emissions to air and effeciency. The requirements concerning the use of chemicals with hazard classifications in final production have also been tightened. Also, a new requirement has been added that Products used for surface paint/ -varnish must contain a maximum  (VOC 60%).
