Nordic Swan Ecolabel de-icers

A Nordic Swan Ecolabel de-icer meet ambitious environmental requirements from a holistic life cycle perspective. This means that Nordic Swan Ecolabelled de-icers are amongst the environmentally best in their category.

What has been changed?

The most important changes compared to generation 2 of the criteria are:

  • A definition of ingoing substances and impurities is introduced.
  • A requirement for classification of ingoing substances is introduced (O4).
  • The ecotoxicity requirement is tightened (O7).
  • The limit values for nitrogen, phosphorus, and chlorine are tightened (O8).
  • The limit values for heavy metals are tightened (O9).
  • A list with prohibited substances is introduced (O10).
  • The efficiency requirement is updated with new test standards, and it is no longer possible to perform user tests (O12).
  • Packaging requirements regarding recycled material and design for recycling are introduced (O14-O15).
  • Declarations from the manufacturer of the product and all the raw materials are introduced (Appendix 2 and 3).

We ask for input on the proposal as a whole and specifically on the following

  • The requirement for classification of ingoing substances (O4). Please, look at the requirement based on the definition of ingoing substances and impurities on page 11.
  • The tightened limit value for chlorine (O8).

What happens next?

When the consultation period is complete, the answers will be compiled and evaluated. For this reason, a new revised proposal for criteria will be submitted to the national ecolabelling boards and committees. On this basis, the Nordic Ecolabelling Board will then decide on new criteria.

Part of the decision document is the summary of all hearing responses together with answers from Nordic Ecolabelling. The summary will be public and available on the Nordic Swan Ecolabel web page in connection with the publication of the new criteria.

We look forward to receiving your comments no later than 28 May 2023.
